Populäre Bildformeln der chronischen ›Frauenkrankheit‹ aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive
This essay, from the perspective of the history and theory of culture, focuses on diverse visual formulas that play a dual role in the German-language discourse on endometriosis. On the one hand, they identify this ›women’s disease‹ as a long-invisible, painful, incurable condition. On the other hand, they highlight a complex problem that is not purely individual but sociopolitical. This essay analyzes incisive images from medicine and popular culture that demonize endometriosis, stylize it as natural, or downplay its severity. In doing so, it draws on the history and images of other ›women’s diseases‹ such as ›female hysteria‹. At the same time the contemporary imagery helps to make the social problem of endometriosis more visible both visually and politically, and these images help to invent strategies of empowerment, such as addressing those affected personally and opening up new associations.
Carla Cerdas posthumanistische Infrastrukturpoetik
This article explores the critical posthumanist infrastructural poetics of the German-language poet Carla Cerda. Cerda’s series of poems »Loop2« (2020)and its main subject, the submarine cable MAREA, are examined to show that in contemporary poetry, counter-narratives to this part of critical digital infrastructures are circulating. The poems do not only focus on the situatedness and materiality of the cable itself, but they also stage more-than-human beings and cyborgs as both collaborators of big technology companies and resistant entities. This decenters the human point of view, while at the same time calling for the readers’ responsibility for infrastructural, socio-economic and ecological concerns.
Emotionsrepertoires des sozialen Aufstiegs in deutschsprachigen Autosoziobiografien der Gegenwart
In the increasingly popular genre of autobiographical texts that place an individual’s life in a socio-economic context (known as Autosoziobiografien in German), shame emerges as a central emotion. This emphasis on shame is evident not only in the texts themselves, but also in literary analyses and feuilletons. However, from a sociological and literary studies perspective we challenge this focus on shame. Drawing on current sociological research on emotions in the context of class mobility and our analysis of three texts – Daniela Dröscherʼs Zeige deine Klasse, Christian Baronʼs Ein Mann seiner Klasse, and Deniz Ohdeʼs Streulicht – we examine how shame has been positioned as the normative core of the emotion repertoire o fclass mobility. At the same time, we demonstrate that the emotional spectrum of social mobility and its literary representation is far more nuanced and multifaceted than this narrow focus on shame suggests.
Dadaistische Ästhetik und Kolonialismuskritik bei Richard Huelsenbeck
Richard Huelsenbeck’s 1930 novel China frisst Menschen (China devours People) combines travelogue, avant-garde formal experimentation, and anti-colonial reflection into a text that resists conventional genre classifications. This article shows how Huelsenbeck employs aesthetic strategies to destabilise colonial patterns of perception. The China depicted in the novel appears less as a concrete cultural space than as a projection surface on which the limits of Western epistemic certainty becomes visible. The article calls for a reassessment of this largely neglected novel, highlighting the political potential of avant-garde aesthetics in German literature of the interwar period.
